Children are vulnerable to many things, physically, mentally and emotionally. When organizations get together for the sake of the children, it is to address the concerns revolving around said children and how to better their situation.
Tuesday, the BCFS Health and Human Services-Del Rio hosted the Val Verde County Proclamation Ceremony to promote awareness and speak out against child abuse in Val Verde County for National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Youth from BCFS Health and Human Services-San Antonio’s Preparation for Adult Living (PAL) program took part in a fashion show promoting personal style and professionalism at the Granberry Hills Event Facility on the northeast side of San Antonio, Texas.
“We have held this event for several years now and think
it’s very important for the professional development of the young people we
serve. The students always show a lot of confidence, and it is such a joy
watching them blossom and taking ownership when it comes to their future
success.,” said Celeste Garcia, Executive Director of BCFS Health and Human
Services’ Community Services Division.
Sofia Gayou, a Learning Development Professional and the
speaker for the evening, offered tips on first impressions and professionalism
in action. “When I walked up here, it only took you seven seconds to make a
judgement about me,” said Sofia. Her advice was aimed at making an impact on a future
employer that would last well after the interview was done.
Sofia reminded attendants that the vast majority of
communication is nonverbal. Just as dressing professionally is important for
making a great impression, equally important are your tone, posture, and
gestures.
Sofia then asked youth to write down a list of attributes
they felt described them – the attributes that they wanted to define their
professional lives – and challenged the youth to put energy into making that
list a real representation of who they are and how they present themselves.
After hours of getting dressed, made up, and running
through dress rehearsal, it was time to begin the show. Outside, the sun passed
behind the horizon. The lights in the main hall dimmed down and the music hit a
rhythm worth walking to. A pair of spotlights centered on the small, curtained
entrance at the back end of the room. The walkway in the center was waxed, flanked
by the audience on both sides; ready for the night’s participants to display
their best professional attire.
The youth went through two rounds of showcase, the first casual
and the second formal wear. Between the two rounds, a few local celebrities
made guest appearances on the runway, including Miss San Antonio, Miss Black
Texas, and Toddler Miss BRP USA.
At the end of the show, each of the youth were handed a
bouquet of red roses. Several of the dresses and suits worn by the youth were
donated to them to take home, adding to the box of professional tools from
which they can fashion their future.

There was a sense of excitement at Breckenridge
Village of Tyler as BVT residents and day-program participants prepared for A
Night to Shine, an international formal affair presented by the Tim Tebow
Foundation. In 2018, the foundation brought its formal event to Tyler’s Grace
Community Church, who blessed BVT with an invitation to don evening gowns and
tuxedos for a special dinner and dance.
A room in the BVT chapel was transformed into a salon, where, from their stylists’ chairs, BVT residents Deborah and Tammy spotted the camera and were quick to raise an eyebrow and flash a smile. With her hair done just right, Tammy offered a head-to-toe pose for the full effect of the evening’s ensemble and featured accoutrements.
In an adjacent building on the BVT campus, freshly
groomed and shaven gentlemen lounged in formal wear. When word came, they rose
from their seats, buttoned and straightened their boutonnieres and jackets, and
strode confidently to greet their companions for the evening.
Guests were ushered into two elegant stretch limousines and driven to a red carpet welcoming the affair’s most esteemed guests. Bulbs flashed as each guest sauntered down the crimson path, pausing in the splashes of light, clutching their decorative wraps and coats, formal defense for an East Texas February chill.

Inside, the church wore the glitz and glamour of a
gala. Balloons floated above tables where friendly and attentive volunteers
welcomed the party’s new arrivals. Ahead of the sign-in table, a colorful array
of food and drink to energize attendees for dancing, karaoke singing, and a special
message from the event’s lead advocate, Tim Tebow.
In the main ballroom, the music fell, and the public address announcer asked for everyone’s attention. As Tebow’s projected image appeared, the crowd erupted in jubilant applause. His message – that God sees each one of us as a king or a queen. As the message concluded, volunteers produced gleaming crowns and sparkling tiaras for the partygoers, generating the broad smiles that reflect the presence of the King of Kings in the hearts of all Christ’s children.
